STYLE: Alpine-chic, contemporary, fun
ITEMS: Wedding invitations, lined envelopes, order of service, menus, hanging die-cut table plan, placenames, favour bottle labels
BRIEF CRITERIA: Avid skiers Rhea & Will came to Paperknots with a super fun and unique brief. As they live in the French Alps, and Will had proposed to Rhea in a private mountain telecabine on one of their skiing holidays, an alpine wedding was inevitably their first choice. The chalet they booked for the wedding was a contemporary take of a traditional ski lodge and they wanted their stationery to echo this concept of a modern twist of alpine style (Rhea described it as “alpine chic”).
THE RESULT: Firstly a monogram was created by combining the couple’s initials with the stag’s head from the venue’s branding – this motif would be used across all their stationery. There was no colour-theme for the wedding – instead the couple asked us to draw upon the natural materials used by the hotel and its surroundings. We took inspiration from elements such as wood, slate and the landscape which saw a palette of browns, greys, blacks and greens come together.
The main invitation was printed on a natural brown fleck cardstock with mono graphics and clean typography to inform guests of the wedding details. To add a pop of colour and bring the ‘fun vibe’ to the suite, the information cards were headed up with a illustrative mountain scene, with a nod to Will’s proposal by including the mountain gondolas in the background.
The suite, which also included RSVPs, information cards about flights and accommodation and fun facts about the area, was finished with a handmade unique wrap. A string and washer fastening was added to the wrap to give suggestion of the gondolas threading their way through the lift stations. Perfectly on ‘theme’ and something fun and tactile the guests would enjoy as they unwrapped their invitations.
The design was rolled out across a number of stationery items for the day including an order of service, menu, place names and mini labels to attach to their ‘Alpine Herbal Liqueur’ wedding favours. The show-stopper of the day was the one-of-a-kind table plan which was suspended between a pair of vintage skis. Taking the gondola illustration from the invites, over 100 escort style name tags were cut into the shape of the cabins and hung to a “cable” to create the bride and groom’s personal wedding ski lift!
